  • Tolani Maritime institute conducts the one year Pre Sea Deck Cadet Course leading to Diploma in Nautical Science from the Indian Maritime University (IMU).
  • This diploma programme is followed by one and half year (3 Semesters) on-board ship training and after successful completion of the same, a candidate is awarded Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science (ADNS).
  • After completion of the on-board training, the Sixth Semester constitutes “Second Mate Certificate of Competency” awarded by the Directorate General of Shipping and leads to simultaneous award of B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) degree from IMU.
  • The first two Semesters i.e. First year constitute on-shore training which is designed to impart basic knowledge on the type of merchant ships, ship operations, types of goods carried by ships, shipping trade and a good foundation in the basic principles of navigation and environmental sciences.
  • Admission to this course is granted after clearing IMUCET.
Intake for DNS (IMU) programme
  • TMI has approval to admit 120 candidates for the Diploma in Nautical Science (IMU) leading to B.Sc. Applied Nautical Science (IMU). TMI accepts only company sponsored candidates for admission in the IMU programme. Though any registered shipping company can sponsor candidates for the DNS programme, following companies normally sponsor candidates at TMI:
  • Fleet Management, MSC, Nortrans, Fleet Management Limited, Tolani Shipping, TORM, V-Ships, Wilhelmsen Ship Management.
  • Last year following companies sponsored candidates:
  • Varren Marine Services, Aurus Ship Management, DeeVee Shipping, DRS Marine, Eklavya Ship Management, Fleet Management, Lilly Maritime, Fleet Management Limited, SunTech Shipping, Tolani Shipping, TORM, Wilhelmsen Ship Management

  • Origin: Training Ship Rahaman was founded in 1910.
  • Founder: Established by Haji Ismail Yusuf, owner of the Bombay Steam Navigation (BSN) Company.
  • Location: Originally located at Rashid Mansion, Worli Point, Bombay.
  • Purpose: Created as a charitable institution to benefit the seafaring community.
  • Objective: Aimed to support orphans and wards of seafarers, regardless of their caste, creed, or religion.
  • Goal: To encourage these individuals to pursue maritime careers and address the shortage of trained deckhands and officers in the country’s mercantile marine.

Diploma in Nautical Science Course Eligibility

Education Qualification
Age Limit:
  • Minimum - 17 years, Maximum - 25 years.
Education Qualification:
  • Should have scored at least 60% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Class XII with an overall aggregate of 65%.
  • OR B.Sc in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Electronics with Physics — minimum 60% in the final year.
  • OR B.E./B.Tech. degree — minimum 60% average in the final year.
English:
  • Should have obtained 60% marks in English in Class XII.
Physical/Medical Standards:
  • Physical and mental fitness are required for DNS program selection, along with 6/6 vision and no color blindness.

    Cost of Training
  • For the batch commencing August 2025, For the batch commencing August 2025, the all inclusive cost (tuition fees, boarding, lodging, uniform, etc.) of training for one year diploma course is Rs. 6,78,000/- for boys and Rs.5,73,465/- for girls.
  • Fee is accepted by Online payment or by Demand Draft only.
    • Education Loan
  • If required, sponsoring company will assist the candidates selected by them to avail education loans from banks.
  • Shipping companies, based on their criteria, may offer scholarship programmes.
  • TMI will provide the required documents for securing education loan.
    • Refund Policy
  • In case a student, after completing the admission process and paying the fees, decides to withdraw from the Institute, a part of the fees will be forfeited. The amount forfeited depends on the date of withdrawal communicated in writing by the student and parent/guardian.
  • The refund policy for the year 2025-26 is as follows:

    Selection Procedure

  1. Upon receipt of IMU test result & Class XII exam result, inform TMI by fastest means (email /fax) indicating your registration number. Passing of IMU test and minimum 60% in PCM group in Class XII is mandatory.
  2. Eligible students will be called for interviews and medicals by the sponsoring companies.
  3. Shipping companies will select the candidates and issue sponsorship letter.
  4. Candidate to submit/report to TMI with sponsorship letter and other documents.
  5. Payment of Fee as per details given in the Admission Letter.
  6. Report for the course at TMI as per instructions in the Admission Letter.
Training Ship Rahaman
  • The pre sea contact programme at an approved institute consists of two stages, each of about 23 weeks duration. Admission for this programme is offered twice a year in February and August. IMU will invite applications through advertisements in national dailies detailing all relevant information, criteria for admission, last date for submission of forms and a list of the training institutes which are approved by DGS & IMU to conduct the Course. Candidates have to clear IMU Combined Entrance Test (CET).
  • Prospective cadets who apply to the institute will be sent to shipping companies for selection / sponsorship. Those selected by the companies will be accepted for training. subject to clearing IMU CET.
  • The Cadets may please note that after successful completion of Stage 1 of the training programme, they are required in Stage 2 to complete the distance-learning programme SSTP at sea while actually staying on board a ship. Training Institute will liaise with IMU for delivery of the SSTP to the Cadet serving on board a ship.
  • The Training Institutes approved by DGS / IMU on behalf of IMU may admit Cadets sponsored by Shipping Companies. In case of sponsored Cadets, the Training Institutes are required to collect the duly completed forms from the Cadets and send them to IMU with the requisite fees and complete the enrolment formalities.
