The work of marine engineers is structured based on rank and experience, with higher-ranking engineers handling more critical tasks while also training junior engineers.
Watchkeeping and Machinery Operations
Marine engineers, including 2nd and 4th Engineers, are responsible for carrying out watchkeeping duties as per the schedule.
They must assist in the engine room during maneuvering, particularly during arrival and departure at ports.
Maintenance and Performance of Machinery
Engineers oversee the maintenance and performance of critical machinery such as ballast water treatment systems, ballast pumps and valves, cranes, gantries, and auxiliary engines.
On liquefied gas carriers, some maintenance tasks may be assigned to a Gas Engineer.
Reporting and Communication
2nd and 4th Engineers must keep the Chief Engineer informed of any issues regarding their responsibilities.
The 2nd Engineer reports directly to the Chief Engineer for the day-to-day management of the engine room.
Chief Engineer’s Oversight and Decision-Making
The Chief Engineer ensures that the vessel has sufficient fuel, lubricants, engine stores, and machinery spares before departure.
They are responsible for the safe operation of all machinery and must be present in the engine room during critical operations unless required elsewhere due to an emergency.
Regulatory Compliance and Surveys
Marine engineers must ensure that all statutory and class surveys are conducted on time to comply with regulations.
