About

  • Maritime Training Institute (MTI), Powai is an institute under Shipping Corporation of India Land and Assets Limited (SCILAL) under Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. SCILAL is the demerged company of The Shipping Corporation of India Limited (SCI).
  • A pre-sea training of General Purpose Rating Course (GP-Rating) leading to 2nd Mate NVC course will be conducted at Maritime Training Institute at Powai, Mumbai. This course is approved by Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).
  • After completion of 06 months pre-sea training at MTI, candidates will be posted on SCI Fleet vessels as trainee GP-Rating (Deck or Engine). He becomes eligible for Second Mate (Near Coastal Vessel) course on completion of 18 months onboard sea service including approved SSTP and Trainee Record Book (TRB).
  • After clearing of Examination and Orals conducted by D.G. Shipping, Government of india for issuance of “Certificate of Competency (CoC)” for the rank of Second Mate Near Coastal Vessel.

General Purpose Rating Course Eligibility –

Education Qualification:

  • Candidates should have the following educational/academic qualifications and minimum
    eligible criterias as follows:
    • 10th standard pass from Government recognized board with Subjects, English, Mathematics
      & Science with 40% aggregate and English 40% in 10th/12th.
OR
    • 12th standard (any stream) pass from Government recognized board with 40% aggregate. English 40% at 10th/12th but with subjects English, Mathematics & Science at 10th.
OR
  1. Pass 02 years ITI Course (Fitter/Machinist/Mechanic/Welder/Turner) approved by DVET;
    with minimum 40% aggregate marks in final year of ITI & minimum 40% in English in 10th/12th.
  2. Application fee –  SC, ST and female candidates: INR 700.00 (Seven Hundred only) excluding payment gateway transaction charges as applicable.
  3. In case of SC/ST candidates, there is 5% relaxation in eligibility marks, excluding English subject.
  4. Relaxation of 5% in English marks will be applicable to candidates who are native of the
    Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Island and belong to their schedules Tribes and who & both
    of whose parents were born in those Islands & belong to the Schedule Tribes of those Island.
  5. The candidate should have distance vision 6/6 in better eye and 6/9 in other eye and normal colour
    vision shall be tested by Ishihara test chart.
  6. Preference will be given to 12th Standard (science stream) passed from any Government recognized
    board with 40% aggregate, English 40%.
  7. Marital Status: Unmarried.

Age Requirement:

As prescribed by DG Shipping, the age of candidate should be minimum 17 years and maximum 25 years on the date of admission as announced with a relaxation of:

  • Five (05) years for SC/ST candidates;
  • Three (03) years for OBC (NCL) candidates; and
  • Two (02) years additional relaxation for female candidates on the date of admission as announced
    by DG Shipping.

Medical Standard:

  • Candidate must have good health and be fit for sea service as per existing MS Medical Rules 2000/MLC 2006 applicable to seafarers. Medical fitness check will be done only through Directorate General of Shipping`s (DGS) approved Doctors. No waiver will be given for the above standard. Medical examination fees shall be borne by the candidates.

Total40 (Forty) nos. seats are available which are distributed as per below categories,

  • Unreserved (UR) 16
  • Economical Weaker Section (EWS) 04
  • Other Backward Class-Non Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL) 11
  • Scheduled Caste (SC) 06
  • Scheduled Tribe (ST) 03

Registration Process

How To Apply

  1. Applications will be accepted only in online mode from 16.4.2024 (0001 hrs) to 15.5.2024 (1800
    hrs). 
  2. The application fee of INR 1,000.00 for General (UR), OBC-NCL and EWS candidates and INR
    500.00 for SC,ST and Female candidates shall be paid to SCILAL-MTI at the time of submitting online applications without which candidates application forms will not be considered
  3. Eligible candidates are required to present physically at examination centers. It is mandatory that the
    candidates should have a valid e-mail id and mobile number while applying in order to facilitate faster
    communication. All future communications and correspondence will be through emails and our
    official website only.
  4. Detailed instructions for filling the application form will be given under “General Instructions” Candidates should read all instructions before filling application form carefully.
  5. Before applying, candidates should ensure that they fulfil all the eligibility criteria and norms
    mentioned in this advertisement.
  6. Upon saving the on-line application with registration number, candidate has to download the printout
    of application form. Candidates are advised to keep one copy each of application form and bank
    transaction fee receipt with him/her. This copy will be required to submit before interview during
    documents verification, if qualified in the on line examination.
  7. Filling of multiple applications will result in the cancellation of all applications.

  1. Written exam- English, Maths, G.K.
  2. Interview.
